When Reporting On Kratom, The News Media Is Trippin’

There’s an old saying that goes like this: A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes. That thought flashed across my mind when I came across yet another recent news report filled with inaccuracies in the Oregonian, the largest daily newspaper in Oregon.

The story is about a suspect involved in an accident, and police found several empty packets of Kratom powder in the man’s car. Here’s just one of the offending sentences: “The leafy material is grown in Southeast Asian jungles…” it begins, and so far, so good. But the reporter goes on, “…and acts as a stimulant in low doses and can be hallucinogenic in larger amounts.”

OK, hold on. How does the writer end up equating Kratom with LSD or magic mushrooms?  It’s certainly not in the science surrounding Kratom, and it’s also not in the experience of anyone who has ever tried the helpful botanical.

It’s laughable. The problem is that reporters can be lazy, and pick up the inaccuracies of those who were inaccurate before them. So the lies get compounded, passed along without any independent verification of the truth of such a claim.

Invariably, the Kratom community responds immediately to set the writer straight, and that happened in Oregon like it’s happened all over the country.

Quit killing your fat kid!

It sucks to be fat. Turns out I’m not the only person who thinks so. Try a Google search on the topic and start reading. And weeping. It sucks even more if you’re a fat kid.

Fat kids get picked on, all the time. Fat kids get teased, punched and picked last for pretty much everything, from sports activities to the school play. Unless the play is about fat kids. And look at these factoids: 80 percent of fat kids become fat adults. Fat adults are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. And those who were obese as children are twice as likely to die before age 55 than kids who were not overweight.

If you’re the parent of a fat kid, do you know who’s to blame? You are. So quit killing your fat kid.

Maybe that sounds harsh, but it’s true most of the time. All of those excuses we use – “She has a slow metabolism.” “He’s just big-boned.” “It’s a genetic problem that runs in the family” – simply don’t fly. The only genetic problem that comes up in most families is trying to get their fat kid into his jeans.
