Barclays Premiership: Saturday 29th March

March 28th, 2008

This Saturday there are 7 Premiership fixtures taking place with the most attractive looking fixture being Manchester United Vs Aston Villa. Although Fergusons men will be favourites for ther match they will have a tough task against a dangerous, quick, counter attacking Villa side. Villa will be looking to claw back the gap between themselves and Everton for that Uefa spot but with the title race reaching a climax every game from now on in is a must win and Fergie will make sure his players know it.

The other key match is Arsenal Vs Bolton Wanderers. Arsene Wenger will be dreading the trip up north to the Reekbok as Bolton have been somewhat of a bogey team for Arsenal in recent years and with a bad run in the league recently away at a Bolton side fighting to beat the drop is not what they need. Since the loss of Sam Allardyce however, the Bolton resilience has deteriated slightly and with Nicolas Anelka moving down south to Chelsea, goals are a struggle for Gary Megson’s side and they will find it difficult.

The rest of Saturday’s fixtures are:

Birmingham Vs Manchester City, 15:00
Derby Vs Fulham, 15:00
Portsmouth Vs Wigan, 15:00
Reading Vs Blackburn, 15:00
Sunderland Vs West Ham, 15:00

Wembley Loses 2010 Champions League Final To The Bernabeau

March 28th, 2008

Wembley Stadium has lost out on the chance to host the 2010 Champions League final to Real Madrids Bernabeau Stadium because of tax reasons.

Wembley was discounted after failing to provide assurances that players competing in the final would not be taxed by the British government.

Rival bids from Munich and Berlin were also overlooked, while Arsenal lost out to Hamburg for the 2010 Uefa Cup final.

An FA spokesman told BBC Sport: “We believe that Wembley is a very compelling bid and Uefa have acknowledged this.

“We are hopeful that the tax situation can be resolved to Uefa’s satisfaction before the final decision is taken.”

A British Treasury spokesman said in a statement: “The UK has hosted many sporting events in the past and there has been no change in the tax rules or the way they are applied.

“There appears to be some misunderstanding here and we will obviously be speaking to Uefa to clarify the position and reassure them that the rules have not changed.”

Rangers Vs Celtic Saturday 29th March

March 28th, 2008

Rangers V Celtic
29/03/08
Ibrox Park
Kick Off: 12:30

It is now squeaky bum time in the Scottish season with only 10 SPL games left to play and amazingly there are still 3 Old Firm games to be played, the first of which is to be played tomorrow at Ibrox.

Walter Smiths men will be going into Saturdays Old Firm match 3 points in front at the top of the league with a game in hand so a win is a must for Celtic and Gordon Strachan. The home side will no doubt be favourites for the match having won their last 12 consecutive league games and with Gordon Strachan yet to defeat a Rangers side under Walter Smith, The Gers will be confident. Celtic have slipped up in recent times having gone out of the Scottish Cup to the hands of Aberdeen and drawing at Parkhead 0-0 with Dundee United.

The main question is whether Strachan will stick with his bold attitude and field a 4-4-2 formation against what is most likely to be a 4-5-1 Rangers side at home. In the last encounter between the two, Celtic were dominated by the Rangers 5 in the middle of the park so whoever pairs up with Scott Brown in the centre will have to put in a shift.

For Rangers the big question is their choice of striker. Darcheville will be most likely to work the front line on his own in a 4-5-1 system which would leave Kris Boyd benched.

Although there are 3 Old Firm games to play the first is by far the most important for Celtic. Going 6 points behind having played 1 game more would be disaster for Celtic if they are to have any chance of retaining their SPL crown.

Check back for highlights after the game.
