UEFA Champions League Round 1 Round Up
By Football Daft at 18 September, 2008, 1:56 am
So the Champions League finally got underway for the season this week and it certainly threw up a few surprises.
Tuesday 16th September
On Tuesday night we had two sides making their first ever appearances in the competition in Anorthosis Famagusta from Cyprus and CFR Cluj-Napoca from Romania. Boy did these two pull off a shock! Everyone had written off these two of standing any chance in their opening matches, both with away fixtures, Cluj at Roma and Famagusta at Werder Bremen but both sides rose to the occasion and the Romanian side humbled Roma 2-1 on their own patch and Famagusta managed to share the points with Bremen while in the meantime prevented them from putting the ball into the back off the net.
All other matches from Tuesday ended pretty much as they were expected to but perhaps the highlight of the round was a magical strike from Steven Gerrard of Liverpool against Marseille.
Full list of results from Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League matches:
- Basel 1-2 Shakhtar Donetsk
Barcelona 3-1 Sporting Lisbon
Chelsea 4-0 Bordeaux

PSV 0-3 Atletico Madrid
Panathinaikos 0-2 Inter Milan

Wednesday 17th September
It seems the trend had already been for Round 1 of the Champions League as shock results continued to pop up on Wednesday although not quite as impressive as those of Famagusta and CFR Cluj. Group E was the bore group and shock group with none of the 4 teams in it able to get on the scoresheet. AaB Aalborg managed to hold Celtic to a goalless draw at the Fortress that is Celtic Park while Villarreal equaled their antics by holding current English and European champions Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Arsenal were saved by William Gallas in the dying minutes in the Ukraine although Kyiv is a tough place to go to and get a result. Juventus announced their arrival back into the Champions League as though they never had left by taking all three points against Zenit and Real Madrid made light work of FC BATE Borisov who were also playing their first ever Champions League match. Perhaps the highlight from Wednesday’s matches was the quite breathtaking 30 yard free-kick from Del Pierro.
