Chelsea Sign Deco From BarcelonaDeco Signs For Cheslea

Chelsea have completed the signing of Portuguese Midfielder Deco from Barcelona. The fee for the now former Barcelona play-maker is thought to be around £8 Million.

This makes Deco, Luis Felipe Scolari’s first signing as Chelsea boss and add’s to the new Portuguese contingent that is arriving at Stamford Bridge. Technically the capture of Deco makes it Chelsea’s third Portuguese signing of the Summer (including big Phil Scolari and Jose Bosingwa).

Deco joined Barcelona in 2004 after a spell at FC Porto where he won domestic league titles, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League. With Barcelona he claimed 2 domestic league titles and another Champions League title in 2006 when the Catalan giants defeated Arsenal. No matter where he has been Deco has won trophy’s and Chelsea fans will be hoping his record continues at the Blues.

Deco may now be 30 years old and it would be fair to say that he is on the back 9 of his football career but there is no doubt that he is still one of the World’s best in the middle of the park and will be a great addition to the Chelsea squad, especially as Frank Lampard looks set for Inter Milan.

The day is finally upon us. Euro 2008 is coming to an end and it will be Germany and Spain to contest the Final in Vienna today. Although we are all sad to see Euro 2008 come to an end, we are all desperate to see Germany and Spain in the Final in what should be a great climax to what has been a magnificent tournament.

We have come a long way from Germany’s opening win over Poland and Spain’s first of two crushing defeats of Russia but this is it! This is what they have all been playing for, the chance to lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy and its home for the next four years will now be in either Germany or Spain.

Spain have suffered a setback with the loss of David Villa but after the performance Cesc Fabregas put in against Russia as his replacement, Luis Aragones should have no real worries. Fabregas must surely start the Final.

Germany also have fresh worries ahead of the Final today in Michael Ballack who has not been a part of training in the German camp over the last two days. This is a cruel blow for Ballack as he also missed out on the 2002 World Cup final due to suspension.

Who will win it then?

Four years ago Greece taught us that we shouldn’t make pre-assumptions of a Euro Final. Albeit Greece were massive underdogs and Germany and Spain are two of the worlds greatest footballing nations but the same rules apply here. Anyone can win! (Or any two rather). But, seeing as we can’t sit on the sidelines here and we have to choose a winner, i am going to go for Spain.

The Germans are more than capable of winning but i think this is the year when Spain finally break their International curse. Perhaps i WANT to see it rather than actually believing it is going to happen but my prediction is still not going to change. Spain to win Euro 2008 and the scoreline will be… wait for it… Spain 3 - Germany 2.

David Villa Out Of Euro 2008 Final

David Villa: SpainDavid Villa Will Miss The Euro 2008 Final Against Germany

It is now official that Spain striker David Villa will miss the Euro 2008 Final with Germany on Sunday in Vienna with the Spanish Football Federation confirming his injury will rule him out.

Villa suffered a muscle tear to the back of his right thigh in the semi final against the Russians in the first half an hour. Immediately after the Russia match, Villa said himself that he would not be fit in time for Sunday and he has now been proved correct.

The Spanish striker is currently the Euro 2008 top goal scorer but he won’t be adding to his tally of four goals now that he has resigned to watching the Final against Germany from the sidelines. Surprisingly the Spanish star has taken missing out on the biggest game of his life rather well.

He gracefully said: I’m a little sad that I won’t be there to take part but it’s better that a team-mate who is fit plays instead of me, particularly as my injury has left me limping quite badly,”

“Now I have to enjoy the show from outside. To play on Sunday would be a lottery.

“I would do it even if I had to play on one leg but this is a team - there are other players who will do better 100% than one who is injured.

The Euro 2008 Final will definitely be missing something without him, after all, he is the competitions top goal scorer but this could see Cesc Fabregas finally get his start after he impressed coming on for Villa against Russia. Will Luis Aragones bring in Fabregas for Villa and play the same system he did against Russia? or will he simply replace Villa with another centre forward? We all want Fabregas!

Although we all can’t wait for the Euro 2008 Final to take place and get to see Germany and Spain really go at each other, the sad matter of the fact is that Euro 2008 is coming to a close and we will have to wait another 2 years before such another International spectacle will take place. At least we have the Premiership and what not starting in about a months time right?

But for now it is Vienna that is the centre of attention for the entire football world as Germany and Spain have the chance to lift Europe’s greatest prize and become European Champions for the year 2008 (and the four to follow).

Germany are the record winners of the European Championship with three Euro titles to their name with their last victory coming in 1996. Spain’s only major International tournament victory was in the European Championships way back in 1964 but they were also Runners-Up to France in 1984. Germany definitely have more experience in the Final but an International victory has been a long time coming for Spain and they will be determined not to let this great opportunity slip.

At Euro 2008 Spain have been by far the more impressive of the two nations and their only real stumble on the road to the Final (if you can call it that) was the 0-0 draw with Italy in the Quarter Finals. Germany have made the Final having not really done anything special apart from their opening match against Poland which makes you wonder just how they managed to come this far so if they are to beat this silky Spain side and claim the Euro crown they will have to do better on Sunday.

We will keep you updated with all the news in the build up to and during the Euro 2008 Final so don’t go away too far.

Team News

Russia have had some minor injury worries ahead of today’s match with Spain in Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Ivan Saenko and Alexander Anyukov but all three took part in training this week albeit light training so they are expected to start today for Russia.

Spain have no injury worries ahead of the Euro 2008 Semi Final with Russia but Luis Aragones will have the “strain” of having to choose who to play and who not to play from the vast collection of stars he has at his disposal. Will he play Cesc Fabregas or Xavi in the middle of the park? These are the kind of questions he will be asking himself.

Russia Vs Spain - Who will win?

Well Russia have turned into a completely different team with the return of Andrei Arshavin. The Russian playmaker has pulled all the strings since his return from suspension and has really put Russia in with a glorious chance of progressing from the Euro 2008 Semi Final and into the final. Russia will feel they can beat anyone after the 3-1 victory over Holland and quite rightly so. Spain are a great side but Russia can definitely win this one.

Spain will be the favourites to beat Russia today and with their 100% record so far you can’t really argue with that. When you also add the fact that Spain have already beaten Russia at Euro 2008 this year (4-1) then you would feel confident of winning a few quid if you have Spain down for a win at the bookies.

So who will win? I would really like to see Spain reach the final as it has been a long time coming for the Spaniards in an International tournament but i can’t help but think it is going to be another case of “so close but not close enough” for Spain. The Russians have found a new gear they never knew they had and i think they are going to pinch this one. I am going for Russia 2 - Spain 2 with Russia winning in extra time.

Germany Vs Turkey - Who will win?

Germany will surely be the favourites to beat Turkey today in this Euro 2008 Semi Final clash. With Torsten Frings being the only Germany injury worry (and even he may return) compared to the thirteen players that Turkey have missing, it is hard not to see Germany progressing here and Germany will feel confident of reaching the Euro 2008 Final and leaving Turkey heading for the first plane home. However, one thing Turkey have taught us at Euro 2008 this year is don’t write them off! Once Turkey go behind suddenly they become more lively and make the impossible, possible.

So will Turkey live up to new expectations or will Germany prove too strong? I have been going against Turkey from the start and they have proved me wrong all the way but i am going to go against them again here and say that Germany will come out victorious. The injuries and suspensions have finally taken there toll on Turkey now and Germany will over-power them. I am going for Germany 2 - Turkey 1.

Germany

Germany only really have one injury problem ahead of their Euro 2008 Semi Final clash with Turkey in midfielder Torsten Frings. Amazingly though even that may prove meaningless as Frings may feature against Turkey despite suffering from the fractured rib he sustained against Austria in Germany’s final group game. The Germany midfielder was back in training on Monday after the injury had left him out of the quarter final with Portugal but he is still very doubtful and is not expected to be amongst Joachim Low’s chosen starting eleven.

Turkey

Turkey have the complete opposite level of problems from Germany when it comes to injury worries for the Euro 2008 Semi Final match. Turkey are having to face Germany with no less than 13 outfield players unavailable for the Semi Final match. Turkey coach Fatih Terim has even said that he may have to field his third choice Goalkeeper Tolgan Zengin as a defender or a striker later on in the match! When Turkey knocked Croatia out at the quarter final stage they were already missing 6 key players but they will miss a further three against Germany with the loss of Tuncay Sanli, Arda Turan and Emre Asik to suspension. They do have limited good news however with Mehmet Aurelio returning after a 1 match ban.

Germany - Facts

Germany have took part in five European Championship Semi Finals in the past and have reached the Final in four of those five occasions.

Germany’s only defeat in a European Championship Semi Final came in 1988 against Holland who later went on to win the competition.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has achieved the incredible feat of having a goal, an assist, a yellow card and a red card to his name at Euro 2008. The only other player to have achieved this mixtured feat of both good and bad was Denmark’s Klaus Berggreen in 1984.

Turkey - Facts

This is Turkey’s first European Championship Semi Final. The only other time they have reached an International Semi Final was at the World Cup in 2002 when they were beaten 1-0 by Brazil.

Turkey have incredibly only been in the lead for nine minutes (including injury time) during the four games in their run to the Euro 2008 Semi Final. They were in front for just two and a half minutes against Switzerland and six and a half minutes against Czech Republic.

Turkey have been given fifteen cards by referee’s at Euro 2008 which is just four short of the European Championship record set by Czech Republic in 1996.

Euro 2008 Semi Final - And Then There Were Four

Euro 2008 Semi Final - Germany, Russia, Spain and Turkey

The group stages and quarter finals of Euro 2008 have now come and gone, we have went from sixteen to eight and now we are down to just four. The four remaining nations to make up the Euro 2008 Semi Final are Germany, Russia, Spain and Turkey. Two of those four are no surprise at all in Germany and Spain but Russia and Turkey have defied all the odds and pulled of the shocks along the way in their road to the Euro 2008 semi final. Now lets have a look back at how these four got to the Euro 2008 Semi Final.

Germany

Germany were very patchy in the group stage of Euro 2008. They started off the tournament as the favourites to go all way, the won their first match in a convincing fashion over Poland, then they fell away a bit. They then lost to Croatia and were never really in that game, Croatia deserved to win. Then they got through by the skin of their teeth against Austria 1-0. But, this is what Germany do. They stumble through groups then once they have reached the knock out stages they somehow manage to find that extra something that they lacked before. Which they proved against Portugal in the quarter final when they went 2-0 up after 26 minutes. Portugal were never going to be let back into the match by Germany after that.

Could Germany go all the way at Euro 2008? You wouldn’t put it past them but they have Turkey to get past first in the Semi Final. Here’s what they may want to do… Let Turkey score first! You do not want to go 1-0, 2-0 up against them because they WILL come back and beat you!

Russia

Russia have been somewhat of a surprise package to reach the Euro 2008 Semi Final. Russia like Turkey lost their opening Euro 2008 match and looked destined for Euro 2008 failure but after a 1-0 win over Greece and a tremendous 2-0 victory over Sweden with the return of Andrei Arshavin, the talk of a Russian Revolution was back on.

But lets reflect back to where it all began in that 4-1 defeat in their opening match. Why are we reflecting back to their opening match? Because it was a 4-1 defeat to Spain who are Russia’s opponents in the Semi Final. Some might look at this semi final as destiny for Russia to get one back over Spain, some might say that after Spain’s demolition of Russia in the first match that Russia can only lose once again or you could say that this is a new game, a new day, a whole other 90 minutes and any one of the two can win it.

Spain

Spain have raced through Euro 2008 so far and have won 4 out of 4 to reach the Euro 2008 Semi Final. Spain have a terrible record at International tournaments of the past and have always been the under-achievers of the International stage so despite them being hotly tipped to go all the way before Euro 2008 began it is still a surprise that they have made the Semi Final (at least for me anyway).

They have already hammered their Semi Final opponents Russia 4-1 at Euro 2008 this year, beaten Sweden 2-1 and came back from a goal down against Greece to win 2-1 and of course the penalty shootout victory over World Champions Italy yesterday. They are the hot team out of the remaining four left, there is no disputing that but they will have to keep their feet on the ground if they are to reach the Euro 2008 Final and not fall at the last hurdle because Russia are a very dangerous side.

Turkey

Turkey especially have stunned us all the most. After losing their first Euro 2008 match 2-0 against Portugal, Turkey looked destined to finish behind Portugal and Czech Republic in Group A but Turkey just do not know when they are beaten and in both the group games against Switzerland and Czech Republic they came back from behind to win both matches and seal their place in the Euro 2008 quarter finals with a match against Croatia. And what happened in the quarter final with Croatia? They came back from behind of course in the most spectacular of fashions after conceding as late a goal as they possible could in the 119th minute, they struck back immediately and within seconds Semih Senturk had equalised to take the match to penalties, which of course they went on to win. Turkey have taught us one thing at Euro 2008 this year… Do not write them off!

Spain Vs Italy - Euro 2008 Quarter Final - Match Prediction

Spain have a reputation at International tournaments similar to Holland’s. They get out of the blocks at a lightning pace but tend to slow up once they are through from the Group stages. Italy on the other hand are the complete opposite and it is at these stages that Italy excel and step up a gear. But i will forget all about the reputations of Spain and Italy and just go with their current form.

There is no doubt that Spain are the in-form team out of the two. Italy started off very poorly at Euro 2008 and got through by the skin of the teeth whereas Spain have a 100% record winning all three group games. You can never write Italy off but i am going with Spain for the win today. Match Prediction. Spain 3 - Italy 2.

Netherlands Vs Russia - Euro 2008 Quarter Final - Match Preview

After giving some of his key stars a well deserved rest against Romania, Marco Van Basten will bring back in his favoured starting eleven that ripped apart France and World Champions Italy for today’s Euro 2008 Quarter Final against Romania. Strikers Ruud Van Nisterlooy, Dirk Kuyt and defender Andre Ooijer will all return for Holland. Winger Arjen Robben is set retain his place in the Holland side as is Khalid Boulahrouz despite the sad loss of his prematurely-born baby daughter.

Russia are expected to name an unchanged side from the eleven that beat Sweden 2-0 with a fully fit and suspension free Andrei Arshavin included. Despite Holland racing through the Euro 2008 “Group Of Death” with a 100% record many are tipping Russia to cause an upset against the Dutch today in the Quarter Final after their demolition of Sweden but star playmaker Andrei Arshavin who was influential in the victory over Sweden has since said: “I don’t think we needed to score that many goals in the Swedish game. We needed to save them for the next games and I hope we will score a few against the Dutch”.

Whether there is truth in Arshavin’s statement or not one thing that is for sure is that a Russian side with Arshavin included is the equivalent of two extra players on the park he makes that much of a difference for Russia.

Netherlands Vs Russia - Euro 2008 Quarter Final - Match Prediction

I must admit, i am a bit torn between these two sides. Holland were my pick before Euro 2008 started and i am not one to abandon my chosen team but a Russia win wouldn’t surprise me today. Although, all the talk of a Russia revolution since their victory over Sweden, the return of Andrei Arshavin and the omen perhaps that Gus Hiddink will get one over his own country has built this game up to be something special, I’m just not sure that one man (Andrei Arshavin) and the fact that their coach is from the Netherlands is enough ground to base a Russia victory.

Holland have a 100% record from a group that included both the World Cup finalists and if that doesn’t make them the best team at Euro 2008 at the moment then i don’t know what does. I will be going for the favourites but this one could go down to the wire. My Prediction. Netherlands 3 - Russia 1 (with a late Holland goal after a Russian comeback… how precise is that!).

Croatia Vs Turkey is a rather tasty looking affair with two teams that have an incredible will to win. You know what you’re going to get from these two sides. Both teams will give 110% and this should be a very entertaining match up indeed. We have already seen evidence of the Turkey spirit after they remarkably came back from behind twice to secure the points that catapulted them into the Euro 2008 Quarter Final. Croatia also have that strong desire for greatness but it has been their technical talents that has seem them get through to the quarter finals rather than their dogged approach to the game. Croatia Vs Turkey - Euro 2008 Quarter Final - Match Preview

Croatia had doubts over the fitness of Ivan Rakitic and Darijo Srna ahead of today’s match but Ivan Rakitic has announced that he is fit to play in today’s Euro 2008 Quarter Final against Turkey and Darijo Srna has also managed to shake off a thigh injury and should be a definite starter for Croatia against Turkey today. However it’s not all grins and giggles for Croatia as Dario Knezevic and Igor Budan have been ruled out for the rest of Euro 2008.

Turkey will have to do without their goalkeeper Volkan Demirel who is suspended today after being sent off in their last match against Czech Republic. This means that veteran goalkeeper Rustu Recber is in line to replace him between the sticks and win his 117th cap for Turkey. Mehmet Aurelio is also banned for Turkey and Servet Cetin will be missing in the Turkey defence due to a knee injury.

No matter what happens to Croatia today it will be a landmark day for their captain Niko Kovac who has announced that he will retire from International football after Euro 2008 has finished. So this could be his last match for Croatia or it could be another step on a road to a fairytale ending to a fabulous International career.

Croatia and Turkey have met each other on three different occasions and Turkey have never won. Croatia have won once and the other two matches ended in a draw.

Croatia Vs Turkey - Euro 2008 Quarter Final - Match Prediction

Like i have said before, it is now the Quarter Final stage of Euro 2008 and anything can happen. It is no different here and although Turkey got through by the skin of their teeth they shouldn’t be written off here. They have already shown tremendous spirit so far at Euro 2008 to come back from behind twice to win crucial matches and they will feel that they can knock Croatia out today. Slaven Billic’s Croatia have been magnificent so far at Euro 2008 and will want to keep their 100% record going. Like Turkey, Croatia have tremendous spirit and really work hard for each other but they also have the quality and technically gifted players to with it. Turkey won’t give Croatia an easy game but i believe Croatia have more quality and this will be the basis by which they win. Croatia to win today for me and the scoreline will be Croatia 2 - Turkey 1. Read on to watch Croatia Vs Turkey Live Streaming Online.

Portugal Vs Germany

We are now in the Euro 2008 Quarter Final stage and we start with Portugal Vs Germany. From here on in anything is possible and anyone can win the tournament. Germany’s stock has dropped since the start of Euro 2008 after stumbling their way through the group stage whereas Portugal’s has only increased since the tournament began. This one is just too hard to call though, there is no doubt that these two great footballing nations are World Class and either nation could come away as the victors.

Portugal Vs Germany - Match Preview

Injury problems have finally hit Germany and they couldn’t have came at a worse time as they now have to face Portugal in the Euro 2008 Quarter Finals. Torsten Frings and their top goalscorer Lukas Podolski are the main concerns for Germany. Torsten Frings is a major doubt with fractured ribs and Lukas Podolski has a calf injury. Podolski is the more likely to start and quite frankly it would take a miracle for Frings to start the match with fractured ribs but the Germany staff will be working around the clock to get him fit for the game.

Portugal on the other hand have no injury worries and Luis Felipe Scolari will field his strongest 11 against Germany today. Nuno Gomes is expected to be the lone striker up front with Cristiano Ronaldo and Simao following up behind him. None of the players that came in for the match against Switzerland are likely to be given a start after not contributing enough last time out.

On head to heads it is Germany who are the top dogs with 7 wins out of a possible 15 whereas Portugal have won just 3. Their last encounter came at the 2006 World Cup in the third place playoff match which Germany won 3-1.

Portugal Vs Germany - Match Prediction

Now that Euro 2008 has reached the Quarter Final stage all the games now are going to be hard to call. Portugal Vs Germany definitely falls under that category and i just can’t make up my mind on this. I am leaning more towards Portugal because they play the flashier and more attractive football but Germany are big and strong and are the masters of stumbling their way through the group stages and really excelling once the Quarter Final stage comes. Portugal in their first two matches were brilliant and those 11 players are the ones that Scolari is likely to field and that team for me is good enough to win Euro 2008. However if Germany get rid of Mario Gomez up front who has been extremely disappointing for me and play Podolski and Klose together then they could win this. I think i am going to go for Portugal though, they have several players who can spark something out of nothing and with those types of players they are always going to get chances. Match prediction = Portugal 3 - Germany 2. Read on to watch Portugal Vs Germany Live Online.
