2010 – England’s Best Opportunity

By Football Daft at 21 April, 2010, 6:20 pm

Despite it being banded around every four years, the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa is generally considered to be England’s best opportunity of winning the trophy for many years. Partybets is providing all the odds World Cup Captain John Terry is now at his peak level of performance, despite off the field troubles, and the athletic full back pairing of Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson means England’s defence seems at its strongest for years. Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are also reaching their peak playing years, and the youthful trickery of James Milner, Aaron Lennon and Theo Walcott are at manager Fabio Capello’s disposal. The only grey area seems to be who will partner Wayne Rooney in attack, however, Jermaine Defoe has recently been on electric form for Tottenham, therefore he is the current favourite. However, Peter Crouch and Emile Heskey have figured prominently in friendly internationals, with the former scoring two goals recently against Egypt.

Another question on many England fan’s minds will be whether Gareth Barry will partner Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard in midfield, or whether Capello will simply play all three. These questions will remain unanswered until Capello announces his squad. However, the manager’s biggest problem in the lead up to the finals in South Africa concerns the goalkeeper’s position. England have yet to stick with a number one keeper, and have tried various candidates in the role. Manchester United’s Ben Foster was an early favourite to wear the gloves at the finals, but his form has recently petered off, and he’s failed to hold down a starting place for his club. Manchester City’s Joe Hart, West Ham’s Robert Green, and Portsmouth’s David James are also contenders.
