Usually when Birmingham and Sunderland are paired it isn’t a fixture that immediately jumps out at you but with Steve Bruce going back to his old haunting ground it makes this one extra tasty. The now Sunderland manager left Birmingham two years ago in a rather bitter fashion so it will interesting to see how the Birmingham fans take to him and indeed how he takes to them this weekend.

It has been a predictably slow start to the season from Birmingham with the Midlands club only managing to register wins against Hull and Portsmouth so far in the league. At the other end of the scale though are Sunderland who are sitting pretty up in 7th after an impressive opening nine games.

In fairness to Birmingham they have been struggling with injuries recently but they will be boosted by the news that Franck Queudrue and Stuart Parnaby should be set to return to the starting line up for the visit of Sunderland this weekend. That should give a lift to a back four that hasn’t kept a clean sheet since the 1-0 win over Hull.

Sunderland have a couple of concerns ahead of their trip to Birmingham with Lee Cattermole expected to be out of action for around 12 weeks after suffering ligament damage against Liverpool last week. Kenwyne Jones also suffered an injury in that match and had to be stretchered off but he is still expected to play a part for Sunderland this weekend.
