Birmingham vs Chelsea : Preview.
An in-form Birmingham side will welcome Chelsea to St Andrews stadium as they look to end 2009 on the highest of notes by taking all three points against the championship favourites. Despite a recent dip in form Chelsea are four points clear at the top but a win against Birmingham is crucial for the Blues if they are to fend off the chasing pack.
It is the away form of Chelsea that has let them down recently having not recorded a win away from home since the defeat of Arsenal at the Emirates. This will give Birmingham fans some heart this Boxing day and with the run that Birmingham are currently on it will be of no surprise to anyone should they come away with maximum points.
Birmingham are currently unbeaten in nine matches and a win against Chelsea this Boxing day will see them move into the top six – a position that Alex McLeish could only have dreamed of at the start of the season. The takeover of Carson Yeung and the funds that have come with him seem to have done Birmingham the world of good with every player fighting for his place in the side. Despite having money to spend in January the current crop of Birmingham players are really making Alex McLeish think twice about spending in the forthcoming transfer window.
The match against Birmingham will be the last that Chelsea will have their African contingent available for before they head of to the African Cup of Nations on the 27th December. Carlo Ancelotti will be looking for Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou and John Obi Mikel to give him one last big performance to see off Birmingham and maintain their push for the title before they depart for Africa.
On the injury front Chelsea have no fresh concerns and are expected to field the same strating eleven as last week. However, Daniel Sturridge is pushing for a start up front alongside Didier Drogba instead of Salomon Kalou.
Birmingham will also hope to name an unchanged side for their seventh consecutive match, however, there are doubts over the fitness of the impressive Roger Johnsson and Liam Ridgewell at the back. Both players will undergo late fitness tests on Boxing day but Birmingham will be hopeful that they will be fit in time.
