Burnley vs Chelsea : Preview.
With the departure of Owen Coyle and the shaky start made by new manager Brian Laws it doesn’t bode well for Burnley in the run-in to the end of the season. It doesn’t get any easier for Burnley this week either as they welcome league leaders Chelsea to Turf Moor in a match which will see them as massive underdogs. In contrast Chelsea should be in a buoyant mood as a win against Burnley will see them move further in front of the chasing two with Manchester United and Arsenal set to face each other on Sunday.
Burnley haven’t won in the Premier League since Halloween when they defeated Hull and even the most optimistic of Burnley fans won’t be betting on that winless run coming to an end against Chelsea this weekend. Chelsea have been in maginifent form of late and have amassed a total of nineteen goals from their last five matches whereas Burnley have bagged just two from their last five.
More bad news for Burnley will be the return of Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou to the Chelsea squad after returning from the African Cup of Nations. Although, after looking at Chelsea’s last five matches there is no evidence there to suggest that they actually need them!
On the plus side Burnley will welcome the opportunity to play in front of their home support after having played all of their last five matches away from home. From the twenty points that Burnley have collected in the league this season nineteen of them have been won at Turf Moor. It is well worth noting that Burnley have beaten Man Utd and Everton at Turf Moor this season while also securing a draw against Arsenal just last month so if they are to nick a point or three from Chelsea then this is the place that they’ll do it.
Didier Drogba is likely to be thrown straight back into the mix for Chelsea to partner the in-form Nicolas Anelka up front while Salomon will take his seat upon the bench. Branislav Ivanovic is likely to keep his place in the Chelsea defence in the absence of Jose Bosingwa and Juliano Belletti.
Brian Laws signed two new players during the week in defender Leon Cort from Stoke and Nicky Weaver who was a free agent. Whether either of them will merit a start remains to be seen however with both players lacking in match sharpness.
Whenever Burnley are playing at home i always fancy them to cause an upset (or at least i did), however, i feel the departure of Owen Coyle has left Burnley deflated and i wouldn’t be surprised if they went on the slide for the remainder of the season. I don’t think Burnley have the fire power to cause the Chelsea defence too many problems so simply scoring here will be an achievement. Chelsea will be far too strong for them especially in midfield and i see the Blues coming out as comfortable winners.
