Chelsea: Their Road To The UEFA Champions League Final In Moscow

May 20th, 2008

The day is finally upon us, the day of the Champions League final for the 2007/2008 season has finally arrived and it is certain to be a cracker. This years final will go down in the UEFA Champions League history books no matter how good or bad, how exciting or how drab a match it is because this is the first time in Champions League history that we will have an all English, UEFA Champions League final. Let’s have a look at how both teams managed to reach the greatest stage of all in European Club football.

Chelsea: Road To Moscow 2008

Group Stages: Chelsea started off their UEFA Champions League campaign for 2007/2008 in Group B alongside Valencia, FC Schalke and Rosenborg. Chelsea got through Group B without losing a single game, a feat which their Champions League final opponents, Manchester United, also managed to achieve. Their group record consisted of 3 wins and 3 draws, a draw against each team and a victory against each team.

Last 16: Chelsea 3 - Olympiakos 0 (agg)
In the round of the last 16, Chelsea were drawn against Greek side Olympiakos. Chelsea saw off the Greek giants with a 3-0 aggregate score. The first leg ended in a goalless 0-0 draw in Greece but Chelsea won 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in the return leg with goals from Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard and Salomon Kalou.

Quarter Finals: Chelsea 3 - Fenerbache 2 (agg)
The Quarter Final stage was a real struggle for Avram Grants team and were somewhat fortunate to scrape through against the Turkish side in the end. The Blues found it really difficult in the first leg over in Turkey and suffered a 2-1 defeat thanks to magical strike from Alex. Once again however, in the return leg at Stamford Bridge Chelsea turned it up a gear and finished the match 2-0 victors. The goals from Michael Ballack and Frank Lampard were enough to see the London club progress to the semi finals.

Semi Finals: Chelsea 4 - Liverpool 3 (agg)
Chelsea Vs Liverpool in the semi finals of the Champions League has almost become a Champions League tradition in recent years with Liverpool knocking out Chelsea twice at this stage in recent times. The Blue finally managed to get their revenge this time around though and manager Avram Grant managed to achieve in his first season what the “special one” Jose Mourinho couldn’t in 4 years at the club. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw at Anfield, it could have been all so different however of John Arne Riise hadn’t scored a 93rd minute own goal. Chelsea later went on to win the tie 4-3 on aggregate with a 3-2 win after extra time at Stamford Bridge.

The Final: Chelsea Vs Manchester United - The script has still to be written.

Chelsea Vs Liverpool 2nd Leg Pre-Match Build Up And Highlights.

Live Streaming Available Here

Tonight’s Champions League match is Chelsea Vs Liverpool in the 2nd leg of their semi final encounter and in the build up to the game it is really starting to heat up between the two clubs.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has criticised Chelsea striker Didier Drogba this week by accusing him of diving. We also understand that Rafa has been showing his team some video footage of Drogba’s on-field antics this week to try and stamp it out and as you can imagine Chelsea and Dider Drogba didn’t take too kindly to this form of criticism. Are these masterful mind games from Rafa Benitez? Is he trying to heap the pressure on Drogba and raise awareness on his falling over for the ref’s sake before the game? Or is he simply giving Chelsea and especially Mr Drogba that extra incentive to go out, do well and prove Benitez wrong? I guess we shall found out tonight but even without all this pre-match bitching this game has the foundations to be a cracker.

Liverpool play at their best when they know they have to go out and score goals which is exactly what they have to do tonight. However Chelsea at Stamford Bridge is an easy game for no team and it will be very tough for The Reds. A 0-0 draw will see Chelsea go through but I’d give you 1000-1 on that happening. Chelsea should be favourites to book a Champions League Final place against Manchester United but as we have seen so many times in this competition before, when it gets to this stage you can right off no-one, especially Liverpool who have proved time and again in the Champions League that they fear no-one and have what it takes to beat absolutely anyone.

Fabio Aurelio is Liverpool’s only injury problem and Liverpool’s own goal villain from the first leg, John Arne Riise could fill in for him.

Chelsea’s Frank Lampard looks set to return tonight after missing out in the clash with Manchester United at the weekend due to the death of his mother. Highlights Here After The Match.

Manchester United Vs Barcelona Highlights: Champions League Highlights

April 29th, 2008

The 2nd leg of the Champions League semi finals get underway tonight and the Tuesday fixture this week is Manchester United Vs Barcelona at Old Trafford. Barcelona and Manchester United drew 0-0 in the first leg last week at the Nou Camp in a game which disappointed after all the hype and expectations of it going to be a Champions League classic but in truth it was far from it. Manchester United were a shadow of their usual brilliance in the Nou Camp last week and the performance against Chelsea at the weekend was less than impressive so they will have to get it together and better themselves greatly tonight if they are to have any chance of reaching this years Champions League final in Moscow.

Barcelona themselves have fallen off the pace in recent times with a string of poor results and are now struggling for 2nd place in La Liga, sitting in third place 4 points behind Villarreal. Barcelona’s performance last week in the 1st leg against Manchester United wasn’t all that great either and they too lost at the weekend going down 2-0 to Deportivo so the form and momentum is just not with them at the moment. Manchester United will be the favourites to win the match tonight and progress to the Champions League final in Moscow but once you reach the semi finals stage of the Champions League you should right no one off as any of the teams left are capable of going all way, form or no form and you can bet your life that Barcelona will be giving it their all tonight at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic are big doubts for Sir Alex Ferguson but he is hopeful they will both be fit. Rafael Marquez is suspended for Barcelona after picking up the maximum for yellow cards however Carlos Puyol is back so he will go straight in there at the back. Midfielder Yaya Toure is a doubt with an ankle problem.

Barcelona Vs Manchester United Highlights: Champions League Semi Final 1st Leg

April 23rd, 2008

Tonight’s Champions League match is the much anticipated mouth-watering clash between Barcelona and Manchester United at the Camp Nou. Both teams are blessed with attacking greatness and this should be a game with plenty of flair and plenty of chances. This is the kind of game where the Ronaldo’s and The Messi’s have to step up to the stage and put on a show but the likes of Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto’o are as equally important for Barcelona as are Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez for Manchester United. Both teams are very evenly matched on paper, both are very strong in all fields, up front, in the middle and at the back but Manchester United will be going into the game perhaps with a bit more momentum. Barcelona have found themselves well adrift in their chase for the La Liga title this year whereas Manchester United are currently top domestically however the Nou Camp is one of the hardest away fixtures in world football and coming away with a result is extremely difficult.

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry looks set to start alongside Lionel Messi and Deco tonight for Barcelona after recovering from an illness but Ronaldinho will be absent as will captain Carlos Puyol. Ronaldinho is out due to injury and Carlos Puyol is banned so Rafael Marquez will be most likely to replace him at the back.

Edwin Van Der Sar is available for Manchester United again in goal after recovering from a groin strain. Wayne Rooney has recovered from the hip problem he suffered at the weekend and both Owen Hargreaves and Anderson have recovered from minor injuries. Nemanja Vidic also looks set to play after not taking part in Man Utd’s training session at the Nou Camp as a precaution.

Liverpool Vs Chelsea Champions League Highlights 22nd April

April 22nd, 2008

Liverpool and Chelsea go at it tonight at Anfield in the first leg of their semi final Champions League clash. This is the fourth successive season that Chelsea and Liverpool have met each other in the Champions League and amazingly the third time they will go head to head in the semi finals. Liverpool have been the victors in both previous semi final clashes with The Blues but this is the fourth time Chelsea have reached the semi finals in the last 5 years having never made it to the final so they will be determined to put an end to their semi final curse and finally reach the grandest stage of all in Moscow this year.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been passed fit for the game at Anfield tonight which is a massive boost for the Scousers.

Chelsea will also be getting a huge boost with Frank Lampard returning from compassionate leave due to his mother being ill with pneumonia but start striker Didier Drogba is a slight doubt with a knee injury.

Barcelona Vs Schalke Champions League Highlights 2nd Leg

April 9th, 2008

Schalke will be travelling to the illustrious Nou Camp tonight for their 2nd leg clash with Barcelona hoping that they can get back in the tie. The Nou Camp is never easy to go to and get a result but Schalke can take heart in the fact that Barcelona are missing some of their key stars. Strong Barcelona centre back Gabriel Milito is extremely doubtful after a groin problem he picked up against Getafe, Xavi also ended the game against Getafe in distress and Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi are out with more long term injuries.

Schalke have a pretty much full strength squad, Kevin Kuranyi and Halil Altintop will be back after being rested at the weekend and Jermaine Jones is available for selection again after being suspended for the 1st leg.Check back for highlights after the game.

Man Utd Vs Roma Champions League Highlights 2nd Leg

April 9th, 2008

Manchester United will be welcoming Roma to Old Trafford tonight in the 2nd leg of the quarter final Champions League clash and will be hoping to keep the Italians at bay despite a weakened defence. Man Utd will go into the game with a 2-0 lead but look like they are going to be missing both of their key men at the back, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. Vidic is definitely out and although Rio Fiordinand was in training this morning it is doubtful that he will start.

Roma will be determined to get a result in Manchester after their 7-1 thrashing at Old Trafford last year but they will have to do it without their captain, Francesco Totti. Simone Perotta will be fit however and if Alberto Aquilani can’t get over his injury David Pizzaro will fit in. Check back for highlights after the game.
