The day is finally upon us. Euro 2008 is coming to an end and it will be Germany and Spain to contest the Final in Vienna today. Although we are all sad to see Euro 2008 come to an end, we are all desperate to see Germany and Spain in the Final in what should be a great climax to what has been a magnificent tournament.

We have come a long way from Germany’s opening win over Poland and Spain’s first of two crushing defeats of Russia but this is it! This is what they have all been playing for, the chance to lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy and its home for the next four years will now be in either Germany or Spain.

Spain have suffered a setback with the loss of David Villa but after the performance Cesc Fabregas put in against Russia as his replacement, Luis Aragones should have no real worries. Fabregas must surely start the Final.

Germany also have fresh worries ahead of the Final today in Michael Ballack who has not been a part of training in the German camp over the last two days. This is a cruel blow for Ballack as he also missed out on the 2002 World Cup final due to suspension.

Who will win it then?

Four years ago Greece taught us that we shouldn’t make pre-assumptions of a Euro Final. Albeit Greece were massive underdogs and Germany and Spain are two of the worlds greatest footballing nations but the same rules apply here. Anyone can win! (Or any two rather). But, seeing as we can’t sit on the sidelines here and we have to choose a winner, i am going to go for Spain.

The Germans are more than capable of winning but i think this is the year when Spain finally break their International curse. Perhaps i WANT to see it rather than actually believing it is going to happen but my prediction is still not going to change. Spain to win Euro 2008 and the scoreline will be… wait for it… Spain 3 - Germany 2.

Russia have had some minor injury worries ahead of today’s match with Spain in Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Ivan Saenko and Alexander Anyukov but all three took part in training this week albeit light training so they are expected to start today for Russia.

Spain have no injury worries ahead of the Euro 2008 Semi Final with Russia but Luis Aragones will have the “strain” of having to choose who to play and who not to play from the vast collection of stars he has at his disposal. Will he play Cesc Fabregas or Xavi in the middle of the park? These are the kind of questions he will be asking himself.

Well Russia have turned into a completely different team with the return of Andrei Arshavin. The Russian playmaker has pulled all the strings since his return from suspension and has really put Russia in with a glorious chance of progressing from the Euro 2008 Semi Final and into the final. Russia will feel they can beat anyone after the 3-1 victory over Holland and quite rightly so. Spain are a great side but Russia can definitely win this one.

Spain will be the favourites to beat Russia today and with their 100% record so far you can’t really argue with that. When you also add the fact that Spain have already beaten Russia at Euro 2008 this year (4-1) then you would feel confident of winning a few quid if you have Spain down for a win at the bookies.

So who will win? I would really like to see Spain reach the final as it has been a long time coming for the Spaniards in an International tournament but i can’t help but think it is going to be another case of “so close but not close enough” for Spain. The Russians have found a new gear they never knew they had and i think they are going to pinch this one. I am going for Russia 2 - Spain 2 with Russia winning in extra time.

Germany will surely be the favourites to beat Turkey today in this Euro 2008 Semi Final clash. With Torsten Frings being the only Germany injury worry (and even he may return) compared to the thirteen players that Turkey have missing, it is hard not to see Germany progressing here and Germany will feel confident of reaching the Euro 2008 Final and leaving Turkey heading for the first plane home. However, one thing Turkey have taught us at Euro 2008 this year is don’t write them off! Once Turkey go behind suddenly they become more lively and make the impossible, possible.

I have been going against Turkey from the start and they have proved me wrong all the way but i am going to go against them again here and say that Germany will come out victorious. After giving some of his key stars a well deserved rest against Romania, Marco Van Basten will bring back in his favoured starting eleven that ripped apart France and World Champions Italy for today’s Euro 2008 Quarter Final against Romania. Strikers Ruud Van Nisterlooy, Dirk Kuyt and defender Andre Ooijer will all return for Holland. Russia are expected to name an unchanged side from the eleven that beat Sweden 2-0 with a fully fit and suspension free Andrei Arshavin included. Despite Holland racing through the Euro 2008 “Group Of Death” with a 100% record many are tipping Russia to cause an upset against the Dutch today in the Quarter Final after their demolition of Sweden but star playmaker Andrei Arshavin who was influential in the victory over Sweden has since said: “I don’t think we needed to score that many goals in the Swedish game. Whether there is truth in Arshavin’s statement or not one thing that is for sure is that a Russian side with Arshavin included is the equivalent of two extra players on the park he makes that much of a difference for Russia.

I must admit, i am a bit torn between these two sides. Holland were my pick before Euro 2008 started and i am not one to abandon my chosen team but a Russia win wouldn’t surprise me today. Although, all the talk of a Russia revolution since their victory over Sweden, the return of Andrei Arshavin and the omen perhaps that Gus Hiddink will get one over his own country has built this game up to be something special, I’m just not sure that one man (Andrei Arshavin) and the fact that their coach is from the Netherlands is enough ground to base a Russia victory.

Holland have a 100% record from a group that included both the World Cup finalists and if that doesn’t make them the best team at Euro 2008 at the moment then i don’t know what does. I will be going for the favourites but this one could go down to the wire. My Prediction. Netherlands 3 - Russia 1 (with a late Holland goal after a Russian comeback… how precise is that!).

Croatia Vs Turkey - Euro 2008 Quarter Final - Match Preview

Croatia had doubts over the fitness of Ivan Rakitic and Darijo Srna ahead of today’s match but Ivan Rakitic has announced that he is fit to play in today’s Euro 2008 Quarter Final against Turkey and Darijo Srna has also managed to shake off a thigh injury and should be a definite starter for Croatia against Turkey today. However it’s not all grins and giggles for Croatia as Dario Knezevic and Igor Budan have been ruled out for the rest of Euro 2008.

Turkey will have to do without their goalkeeper Volkan Demirel who is suspended today after being sent off in their last match against Czech Republic. No matter what happens to Croatia today it will be a landmark day for their captain Niko Kovac who has announced that he will retire from International football after Euro 2008 has finished. So this could be his last match for Croatia or it could be another step on a road to a fairytale ending to a fabulous International career.

Croatia and Turkey have met each other on three different occasions and Turkey have never won. Croatia have won once and the other two matches ended in a draw.

Like i have said before, it is now the Quarter Final stage of Euro 2008 and anything can happen. It is no different here and although Turkey got through by the skin of their teeth they shouldn’t be written off here. They have already shown tremendous spirit so far at Euro 2008 to come back from behind twice to win crucial matches and they will feel that they can knock Croatia out today. Slaven Billic’s Croatia have been magnificent so far at Euro 2008 and will want to keep their 100% record going. Like Turkey, Croatia have tremendous spirit and really work hard for each other but they also have the quality and technically gifted players to with it. Turkey won’t give Croatia an easy game but i believe Croatia have more quality and this will be the basis by which they win. Injury problems have finally hit Germany and they couldn’t have came at a worse time as they now have to face Portugal in the Euro 2008 Quarter Finals. Torsten Frings and their top goalscorer Lukas Podolski are the main concerns for Germany. Torsten Frings is a major doubt with fractured ribs and Lukas Podolski has a calf injury. Podolski is the more likely to start and quite frankly it would take a miracle for Frings to start the match with fractured ribs but the Germany staff will be working around the clock to get him fit for the game.

Portugal on the other hand have no injury worries and Luis Felipe Scolari will field his strongest 11 against Germany today. Nuno Gomes is expected to be the lone striker up front with Cristiano Ronaldo and Simao following up behind him. None of the players that came in for the match against Switzerland are likely to be given a start after not contributing enough last time out.

On head to heads it is Germany who are the top dogs with 7 wins out of a possible 15 whereas Portugal have won just 3. Their last encounter came at the 2006 World Cup in the third place playoff match which Germany won 3-1.

Now that Euro 2008 has reached the Quarter Final stage all the games now are going to be hard to call. Portugal Vs Germany definitely falls under that category and i just can’t make up my mind on this. I am leaning more towards Portugal because they play the flashier and more attractive football but Germany are big and strong and are the masters of stumbling their way through the group stages and really excelling once the Quarter Final stage comes. Portugal in their first two matches were brilliant and those 11 players are the ones that Scolari is likely to field and that team for me is good enough to win Euro 2008. However if Germany get rid of Mario Gomez up front who has been extremely disappointing for me and play Podolski and Klose together then they could win this. I think i am going to go for Portugal though, they have several players who can spark something out of nothing and with those types of players they are always going to get chances. Greece are already out of Euro 2008 and are no longer defending their Euro crown so all the pressure they were under has finally lifted and hopefully they can relax, play some good football and give their fans a result to be proud of against Spain but on the other hand Spain are in scintillating form at the moment and they are more than capable of sending Greece packing without a single point to their name.

Greece striker Fanis Gekas will not feature against Spain after he broke his cheekbone playing against Russia. He will be joined on the sidelines by defenders Giourkas Seitaridis and Vassilis Torossidis while Giorgos Karagounis is doubtful in the midfield.

Spain have a few injury problems of their own. Carles Puyol is suffering with an injury to the sole of his right foot, Santi Cazorla has a swollen left foot and David Silva is suffering from a sprained ankle. All three are almost certain to be rested in an attempt to nurture them back to fitness in time for the quarter finals.

Spain have already guaranteed themselves top spot in Group D and Greece have guaranteed themselves bottom spot so it is 1st Vs Last.

On head-to-heads Spain unsurprisingly are the team who have came up trumps with 6 victories out of a possible 9 while Greece have won just once out of a possible 9. These two also met in Euro 2004, a match which ended in a 1-1 draw but their last fixture was in August 2007 which Spain won 3-2 after coming back from 2-1 down.

Russia should be set to start Sergei Semak, defender Yuri Zhirkov and midfielder Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. The three had minor knocks but took part in training on Monday and should be given the green light. Russia star playmaker Andrei Arshavin is available for selection again for Russia after serving his two match ban but Gus Hiddink may leave him on the bench though for the start of the match against Russia as he is lacking in match fitness.

Sweden are still having problems with the fitness of their star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The star striker has played in both of Sweden’s opening group matches despite suffering with a swollen knee and it seems to have finally taken it’s toll on the big flamboyant striker. He is still likely to start but a full 90 minutes is very unlikely.

With defending Euro champions Greece already out of Euro 2008 and Spain have secured top spot as worthy group winners it is all down to Russia Vs Sweden to see who will progress to the quarter finals with Spain. Russia have to beat Sweden to advance but Sweden only need a draw to progress into the quarter finals.

On head to heads it is Russia who head the way, only just, having won 8 out of the 23 times they have played Sweden with Sweden winning 7 and the other 8 ended in a draw. their last competitive match with each other was at the 1994 World Cup which Sweden won 3-1.

After looking at the first two matches, Sweden have been the better side. They were comfortable winners over Greece and lost to Spain 2-1 thanks to a late goal from David Villa. France were without their captain Patrick Viera for their first two group games and he could be set to return for the final group game against Italy today. Viera has struggled with a thigh problem but he seems to have recovered and is fit to play against Italy. France defender William Gallas was absent from the France training session on Saturday but he is an almost certain starter against Italy.

Roberto Donadoni made no fewer than 5 changes to his starting line up against Romania after losing 3-0 to Holland and although they could only manage a draw against the Romanians the improvements were definitely there. Donadoni is expected to go with something similar to the team that played Romania against France but he does have a fully fit squad to make his selection from so their could be even more changes for Italy.

With France, Italy and Romania all battling for that 2nd quarter final spot from Group C the sequences and mathematics for qualification have all gotten rather complicated. Bear with us and we’ll try to get it across to you as simply as possible.

Here goes… Italy can qualify for the quarter finals with a draw against France if Holland beat Romania. A score draw with France and a Holland victory against Romania will see Italy through while a 0-0 draw with France will require Romania losing to Holland at least 3-0. However if Romania beat Holland then neither France or Italy can qualify no matter what the score. Got that?

For France it is a bit more simple. They simply HAVE to win to have any chance of making the Euro 2008 quarter finals. A win for France and a Romania defeat to Holland will see them qualify while a win against Italy and a Romania draw with Holland will also see them reach the quarter finals. There! Before Euro 2008 started i don’t think anyone predicted that France and Italy would be lagging behind and fighting it out with each other in the last group game for an outside chance of reaching the quarter finals. Neither side have been great so far, far from it but lets not forget what these two nations are capable of. They both have bundles of quality in all areas of the park and can be dangerous should they get their act together but so far it is their attack that has let them down. France especially. They have run completely out of ideas in their first two matches and have never really looked like causing anyone serious problems. Italy showed improvements in their last match and i am expecting them to further that today against France. After Buffon saved the penalty against Romania you could see what it meant to the Italy players, they went berserk afterwards and that sort of will to win and determination is something that France have lacked so far. Germany had worries about the fitness of in-form striker Lukas Podolski and right-back Phillip Lahm ahead of their crucial Euro 2008 clash with Austria. But, both Podolski and Lahm have been passed fit to start the game against Austria which will be a huge boost for Germany however left-back Marcell Jansen is out with a shoulder injury and Bastian Schweinsteiger is unavailable after being red-carded in the previous game against Croatia.

Austria MUST win against Germany if they are to have any chance of progressing to the quarter finals but they will have to do it without centre-back Sebastian Proedl who is suspended. Croatia have already secured qualification for the Euro 2008 quarter finals so they are expected to give some players a well earned rest for the game with Poland. Dario Simic and Ivan Klasnic are set to come into the Croatia starting line up and there also 5 Croatia players who are only a booking away from a match suspension so Slaven Bilic is expected to make further changes to try and prevent any suspensions. Croatia stars, Luka Modric, Darijo Srna, Josip Simunic, Robert Kovac, Ivica Olic and Mladen Petric are all just one yellow card away from a suspension so some of them, possibly all, will be rested against Poland.

Poland still have a minimal chance of making it to the quarter final stage. Portugal and Switzerland aren’t really playing for anything in this match with Portugal already having secured the top place in Group A and Switzerland are already out of 2008. Switzerland will be looking to re-claim some pride though and give the home fans something to cheer about in what has been somewhat of an unlucky Euro 2008 for Switzerland. Switzerland lost yet another striker in Eren Derdiyok aginst Turkey so Daniel Gygax should start up front for Switzerland.

Portugal are expected to rest some key players and concentrate more on the quarter finals. This will also give some of the other Portugal players the chance to give coach Luiz Felipe Scolari something to think about for his quarter final starting 11. Cristiano Ronaldo, Jose Bosingwa and Ricardo Carvalho could be rested against Switzerland and hugo Almeida is expected to partner Nuno Gomes in attack.

With Portugal already qualified for the quarter final stages and Switzerland already eliminated from Euro 2008 it is all down to Turkey and the Czech Republic to see who will take the 2nd quarter final place from Group A. Turkey Vs Czech Republic is winner takes all, one will go home and one will go through. And, for the first time in European Championship history if the match ends in a draw then it will go to penalties to see who gets out of the group stage. Turkey are expected to be unchanged from the team that beat Switzerland but Czech Republic are expected to make yet more change by adopting a 4-4-2 formation rather than their preferred 4-5-1 formation. This could result in Milan Baros and Jan Koller actually playing together.

Czech Republic dominate their head to heads with Turkey. The two nations have played each other on 14 occasions and the Czech Republic have won no fewer than 10 times and they are unbeaten in their last 11 encounters with the Turks. Turkey have won just once against the Czechs which was on December 18th 1958. Czech Republic will no doubt be confident of keeping their great record against Turkey in tact but the Turks won’t make it easy for them and they are a tough side.

This is a tough one to call. It is winner takes all and both teams will be giving it 100%. I think this could be a fiery encounter and with emotions flying all over the place and with so much at stake we could see some lose the plot. The Czech Republic i think are cooler under pressure and it could all come down to who performs best when the pressure is on. It will definitely be close, i don’t really see either team running away with this match but i think Czech Republic will come through in the end. After their 2-0 defeat to Sweden and their negative approach to the game, Greece are set to make a few changes for the game against Russia. Yannis Amanatidis or Nikos Liberopoulos will start the match as a 3rd striker for Greece in an attempt to get their Euro title defence back on track. Manchester City striker Georgios Samaras looks set to be sat on the bench yet again for Greece.

Russia are amazingly making no changes after their 4-1 defeat to Spain with Gus Hiddink still having faith in his choice of starting 11. A defeat for either Greece or Russia will see them eliminated from Euro 2008.

Here is an interesting fact for you, this game features the first ever European Champions, Russia and the last European Champions Greece. Not that, that really makes anything difference but i thought you lot would find that interesting, no? Fine! Something perhaps even more interesting though is that Russia were the only team to beat Greece in their run to Euro 2004 glory when they beat them 2-1 in the group stages. Sweden will be missing midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson against Spain in Innsbruck. Wilhelmson is to miss the rest of Euro 2008 with a hamstring injury so Birmingham’s Sebastian Larsson is expected to take his place to face Spain. Niclas Alexandersson is also set to miss the Spain game with a light calf injury but is hopeful of returning for Sweden’s last group game against Russia.

Spain have no injuries for when they face Sweden so head coach Luis Aragones is expected to name the same starting 11 that defeated Russia 4-1 in their opening game so convincingly. Fernando Torres will partner David Villa up front once again despite a small “riff” with Spain coach Luis Aragones. Torres refused to shake hands with the Spain coach after being substituted but has since said he was frustrated with himself and not with Luis Aragones for substituting him.

Netherlands are to welcome back Arjen Robben for the game against France after the winger recovered in time from a groin strain. Robin Van Persie has also recovered from injury for Netherlands although fellow striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar remains out with a calf injury. After Netherlands fantastic performance against Italy though, Arjen Robben may not make the Netherlands starting 11. Marco Van Basten may decide to stick with the same winning 11 players.

France also have players coming back from injuries. Star striker Thierry Henry has recovered from his recent back injury and is expected to start up front for France. Patrick Vieira is also now fully fit and now available for France to choose from, he is also expected to start against the Netherlands. So it looks as though Nicolas Anelka and Jeremy Toulalan will be demoted to the France bench.

After losing 3-0 to Netherlands, Italy manager Roberto Donadoni will be expected to make changes to his starting 11 against Romania. Hot head Marco Materazzi could be replaced at centre-back by Giorgio Chiellini and Gianluca Zambrotta looks set to start in his favoured right-back position with Fabio Grosso taking up the left-back slot. Roma midfielder Daniele de Rossi could step into the Italy midfield and forward player Alessandro Del Pierro may start up front with Luca Toni.

Daniel Niculae could be replaced by Ciprian Marica up front for Romania although the Romanian does have a head injury and will have to wait until the last moment to see whether he will be passed fit to play or not.

Personally i think Donadoni got it all wrong in the match against Netherlands. He played players out of their positions and they lacked creativity. He seems to be changing things for this game by playing Grosso, Del Pierro and maybe Cassano and if he does i think Italy will win this match. They were much better with the introduction of these players against Netherlands. Romania did prove against France though that they can shut teams out and make it hard so it will be tough for Italy but this is a game they MUST win and i think in the end they will come through with the goods. Austria do have Roman Kienast on stand-by though should they need to replace him. The Austria captain Andreas Ivanschitz is suffering from torn ligaments in his right but is amazingly set to play. However Austria do have Umit Korkmaz looking to get a place in their midfield.

Poland will be missing their captain Maciej Zurawski with a thigh injury so Roger Guerreiro is expected to take his place for Poland.
