UEFA EURO 2008 FINAL
Date: Sunday 29th June
Kick Off: 19:45 BST
Venue: Ernst Happel Stadion, Vienna

The day is finally upon us. Euro 2008 is coming to an end and it will be Germany and Spain to contest the Final in Vienna today. Although we are all sad to see Euro 2008 come to an end, we are all desperate to see Germany and Spain in the Final in what should be a great climax to what has been a magnificent tournament.

We have come a long way from Germany’s opening win over Poland and Spain’s first of two crushing defeats of Russia but this is it! This is what they have all been playing for, the chance to lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy and its home for the next four years will now be in either Germany or Spain.

Spain have suffered a setback with the loss of David Villa but after the performance Cesc Fabregas put in against Russia as his replacement, Luis Aragones should have no real worries. Fabregas must surely start the Final.

Germany also have fresh worries ahead of the Final today in Michael Ballack who has not been a part of training in the German camp over the last two days. This is a cruel blow for Ballack as he also missed out on the 2002 World Cup final due to suspension.

Who will win it then?

Four years ago Greece taught us that we shouldn’t make pre-assumptions of a Euro Final. Albeit Greece were massive underdogs and Germany and Spain are two of the worlds greatest footballing nations but the same rules apply here. Anyone can win! (Or any two rather). But, seeing as we can’t sit on the sidelines here and we have to choose a winner, i am going to go for Spain.

The Germans are more than capable of winning but i think this is the year when Spain finally break their International curse. Perhaps i WANT to see it rather than actually believing it is going to happen but my prediction is still not going to change. Spain to win Euro 2008 and the scoreline will be… wait for it… Spain 3 – Germany 2.

GERMANY VS SPAIN
Date: Sunday 29th June
Kick Off: 19:45 BST
Venue: Ernst Happel Stadion, Vienna

Although we all can’t wait for the Euro 2008 Final to take place and get to see Germany and Spain really go at each other, the sad matter of the fact is that Euro 2008 is coming to a close and we will have to wait another 2 years before such another International spectacle will take place. At least we have the Premiership and what not starting in about a months time right?

But for now it is Vienna that is the centre of attention for the entire football world as Germany and Spain have the chance to lift Europe’s greatest prize and become European Champions for the year 2008 (and the four to follow).

Germany are the record winners of the European Championship with three Euro titles to their name with their last victory coming in 1996. Spain’s only major International tournament victory was in the European Championships way back in 1964 but they were also Runners-Up to France in 1984. Germany definitely have more experience in the Final but an International victory has been a long time coming for Spain and they will be determined not to let this great opportunity slip.

At Euro 2008 Spain have been by far the more impressive of the two nations and their only real stumble on the road to the Final (if you can call it that) was the 0-0 draw with Italy in the Quarter Finals. Germany have made the Final having not really done anything special apart from their opening match against Poland which makes you wonder just how they managed to come this far so if they are to beat this silky Spain side and claim the Euro crown they will have to do better on Sunday.

We will keep you updated with all the news in the build up to and during the Euro 2008 Final so don’t go away too far.

Kick off: 19:45 BST
Venue: Ernst Happel Stadion, Vienna
RUSSIA VS SPAIN LIVE ONLINE

Team News

Russia have had some minor injury worries ahead of today’s match with Spain in Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Ivan Saenko and Alexander Anyukov but all three took part in training this week albeit light training so they are expected to start today for Russia.

Spain have no injury worries ahead of the Euro 2008 Semi Final with Russia but Luis Aragones will have the “strain” of having to choose who to play and who not to play from the vast collection of stars he has at his disposal. Will he play Cesc Fabregas or Xavi in the middle of the park? These are the kind of questions he will be asking himself.

Russia Vs Spain – Who will win?

Well Russia have turned into a completely different team with the return of Andrei Arshavin. The Russian playmaker has pulled all the strings since his return from suspension and has really put Russia in with a glorious chance of progressing from the Euro 2008 Semi Final and into the final. Russia will feel they can beat anyone after the 3-1 victory over Holland and quite rightly so. Spain are a great side but Russia can definitely win this one.

Spain will be the favourites to beat Russia today and with their 100% record so far you can’t really argue with that. When you also add the fact that Spain have already beaten Russia at Euro 2008 this year (4-1) then you would feel confident of winning a few quid if you have Spain down for a win at the bookies.

So who will win? I would really like to see Spain reach the final as it has been a long time coming for the Spaniards in an International tournament but i can’t help but think it is going to be another case of “so close but not close enough” for Spain. The Russians have found a new gear they never knew they had and i think they are going to pinch this one. I am going for Russia 2 – Spain 2 with Russia winning in extra time.

GERMANY VS TURKEY LIVE ONLINE

Germany Vs Turkey – Who will win?

Germany will surely be the favourites to beat Turkey today in this Euro 2008 Semi Final clash. With Torsten Frings being the only Germany injury worry (and even he may return) compared to the thirteen players that Turkey have missing, it is hard not to see Germany progressing here and Germany will feel confident of reaching the Euro 2008 Final and leaving Turkey heading for the first plane home. However, one thing Turkey have taught us at Euro 2008 this year is don’t write them off! Once Turkey go behind suddenly they become more lively and make the impossible, possible.

So will Turkey live up to new expectations or will Germany prove too strong? I have been going against Turkey from the start and they have proved me wrong all the way but i am going to go against them again here and say that Germany will come out victorious. The injuries and suspensions have finally taken there toll on Turkey now and Germany will over-power them. I am going for Germany 2 – Turkey 1.

The group stages and quarter finals of Euro 2008 have now come and gone, we have went from sixteen to eight and now we are down to just four. The four remaining nations to make up the Euro 2008 Semi Final are Germany, Russia, Spain and Turkey. Two of those four are no surprise at all in Germany and Spain but Russia and Turkey have defied all the odds and pulled of the shocks along the way in their road to the Euro 2008 semi final. Now lets have a look back at how these four got to the Euro 2008 Semi Final.

Germany

Germany were very patchy in the group stage of Euro 2008. They started off the tournament as the favourites to go all way, the won their first match in a convincing fashion over Poland, then they fell away a bit. They then lost to Croatia and were never really in that game, Croatia deserved to win. Then they got through by the skin of their teeth against Austria 1-0. But, this is what Germany do. They stumble through groups then once they have reached the knock out stages they somehow manage to find that extra something that they lacked before. Which they proved against Portugal in the quarter final when they went 2-0 up after 26 minutes. Portugal were never going to be let back into the match by Germany after that.

Could Germany go all the way at Euro 2008? You wouldn’t put it past them but they have Turkey to get past first in the Semi Final. Here’s what they may want to do… Let Turkey score first! You do not want to go 1-0, 2-0 up against them because they WILL come back and beat you!

Russia

Russia have been somewhat of a surprise package to reach the Euro 2008 Semi Final. Russia like Turkey lost their opening Euro 2008 match and looked destined for Euro 2008 failure but after a 1-0 win over Greece and a tremendous 2-0 victory over Sweden with the return of Andrei Arshavin, the talk of a Russian Revolution was back on.

But lets reflect back to where it all began in that 4-1 defeat in their opening match. Why are we reflecting back to their opening match? Because it was a 4-1 defeat to Spain who are Russia’s opponents in the Semi Final. Some might look at this semi final as destiny for Russia to get one back over Spain, some might say that after Spain’s demolition of Russia in the first match that Russia can only lose once again or you could say that this is a new game, a new day, a whole other 90 minutes and any one of the two can win it.

Spain

Spain have raced through Euro 2008 so far and have won 4 out of 4 to reach the Euro 2008 Semi Final. Spain have a terrible record at International tournaments of the past and have always been the under-achievers of the International stage so despite them being hotly tipped to go all the way before Euro 2008 began it is still a surprise that they have made the Semi Final (at least for me anyway).

They have already hammered their Semi Final opponents Russia 4-1 at Euro 2008 this year, beaten Sweden 2-1 and came back from a goal down against Greece to win 2-1 and of course the penalty shootout victory over World Champions Italy yesterday. They are the hot team out of the remaining four left, there is no disputing that but they will have to keep their feet on the ground if they are to reach the Euro 2008 Final and not fall at the last hurdle because Russia are a very dangerous side.

Turkey

Turkey especially have stunned us all the most. After losing their first Euro 2008 match 2-0 against Portugal, Turkey looked destined to finish behind Portugal and Czech Republic in Group A but Turkey just do not know when they are beaten and in both the group games against Switzerland and Czech Republic they came back from behind to win both matches and seal their place in the Euro 2008 quarter finals with a match against Croatia. And what happened in the quarter final with Croatia? They came back from behind of course in the most spectacular of fashions after conceding as late a goal as they possible could in the 119th minute, they struck back immediately and within seconds Semih Senturk had equalised to take the match to penalties, which of course they went on to win. Turkey have taught us one thing at Euro 2008 this year… Do not write them off!

Match Preview And Facts

New Chelsea signing Jose Bosingwa has been doubtful in the run in to Euro 2008 with a muscle strain but he has declared himself fit to play. Cristiano Ronaldo has also been seen training with an ice pack strapped to his ankle this week but he should be in the starting line up tomorrow against Turkey.

Turkey’s Hamit Altintop has raised cause for concern. He himself has declared himself fit to play tomorrow against Portugal but his club Bayern Munich say that he is struggling with a muscle strain.

Turkey and Portugal have met each other on 6 previous occasions. Turkey have won only once and Portugal have came out on top 5 times. Portugal have also won all 4 of the competitive matches that the two countries have featured in.

Nuno Gomes has the chance to be included alongside Jurgen Klinsman and Vladimir Smicer in the group of players to score in 3 different European Championships. Turkey Goalkeeper Rustu Recber will be Turkey’s only player at this years Euro 2008 who already has experience of playing in the European Championships.

Love Footy Match Prediction

Turkey for me are just not enough of a creative force. In their 7 previous European Championship matches only two of their players have managed to score, one of which was Hakan Sukur who scored 5 and is not in Turkey’s Euro 2008 squad. Looking at the Portugal squad and the creative riches such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma and so on that they have at their disposal, they have the potential to rip this Turkey side apart. The one thing that Portugal lack is a top quality striker but when you have a certain Cristiano Ronaldo in your team who scores as many goals as he does, do you really need one? I predict a Portugal victory… 3-0 i say.

Match Preview and Facts

Switzerland have received a boost ahead of their opening Euro 2008 match against the Czech Republic with the return of Tranquillo Barnetta to training this week. The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder has had a recent ankle problem but he says he is ready to play and is feeling good overall although he has admitted to feeling a little tentative still when going into tackles. Experienced Swiss defender Patrick Muller looks set to miss out tomorrow despite playing in two recent friendlies. The defender missed all of last season with a knee injury.

Czech defender Marek Jankulovski who was a key part of the Czech Republic’s solid defence in qualifying has declared himself fit for tomorrows match after a knee injury. Inspirational captain Tomas Ujfalusi is struggling due to a problem with an abdominal muscle and right back Zdenek Pospech is out with a virus.

These 2 sides have met each other on 30 different occasions with the Czech Republic winning twice the amount of games of Switzerland. The Czechs have won 16 of the 30 encounters compared to Switzerland’s 8. Switzerland failed to win in all of their 6 previous European Championship matches but they haven’t conceded a competitive goal since 16th November 2005 when they lost 4-2 to Turkey in a World Cup qualifier. The Czech Republic conceded the fewest amount of goals in qualifying for Euro 2008 along with France and the Netherlands conceding just 5 goals.

Love Footy Match Prediction

On paper you would have to say that the Czech Republic are the stronger side and they have a good record in the European Championships. They have only won the competition once but they always seem to be in and around there once the semi finals come. Switzerland on the other hand are the hosts and will have the advantage of the home support. The Swiss have made remarkable improvements in recent years and they won’t let the Czech’s take this match easily that is for sure. However, the Czech Republic only conceded 5 goals in the whole of their qualifying campaign so it is no secret that they are a hard side to get past. I don’t think Switzerland have enough fire power to trouble the Czech Republic goal as much as they need to, to win the game so i predict a Czech Republic victory. 2-1 to the Czech Republic, possibly 3-1.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) - It goes without saying really that Cristiano Ronaldo will be the centre of attention at this summers European Championships. The flamboyant Portuguese winger has had a remarkable season at Old Trafford this year, having blitzed George Best’ Manchester United record for most goals scored in a single season by a midfielder by 10 goals. Ronaldo finished the season with 42 goals and won the European Golden Shoe for 2007/2008. His tricks and flicks are sure to dazzle spectators in Austria and Switzerland but don’t be surprised if he bags his fair share of goals as well, a striker may not finish as the competitions top goal scorer this year.

Having previously played for Dynamo Zagreb, Modric hasn’t really featured on the big stage up until now but during Croatia’s Euro 2008 qualifying he really proved how good he is. He is a similar player to Cesc Fabregas, he has great vision, equally good in attack and defence and can thread the ball through to the attack with a blindfold on. He will be Croatia’s playmaker in the middle of the park.

Karim Benzema (France) - Karim Benzema has really come out of the shadows this season and now has a whole load of major European clubs vying for his signature. The young French striker is still only 20 years old but still finished this season as French Ligue 1 top goal scorer for his club Lyon. With Thierry Henry and Nicolas Anelka being somewhat under par this season, we may see quite a lot of Karim Benzema at this years Championship and expect a few goals aswell.

Samir Nasri (France) - Arsenal are extremely keen on the Marseille attacking midfielder and who can blame them. Nasri, aged just 20, has been often referred to as the “New Zinedine Zidane” and this season has broken onto the global scene. The quick and flamboyant France midfielder is sure to light up the tournament with his dribbling skills this year so Arsenal fans keep an eye on him! He may be heading to the Emirates.

Fernando Torres (Spain) - Torres will arguably be the most-watched striker at this years competition by both the fans, and defenders. El Nino has had a fantastic debut season in a Liverpool jersey bagging 33 goals including 24 Premier League goals, a new Premier League record for most goals scored in a debut season. His lightning pace, movement and incredible finishing are the traits of all great strikers and he will be a threat against any team. Defenders beware!

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Netherlands) - There is only one way to describe the big Dutch striker and that is “Goal Machine”. The Ajax striker has an incredible goals to games ratio and is one of Europe’s best marksmen if not the best. In 2005–06 season he scored 33 goals in 31 games and in the 2007/08 season he scored 33 goals in 34 games. The Dutchman is a defenders nightmare and he is certain to grab a few goals at this summers tournament.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden) - The big Swede hasn’t really put on the show at major tournaments in the past quite as much as what was expected from him but for Inter Milan, he does it week in, week out in Serie A. The flamboyant trickster is like Dimitar Berbatov x2 and is nothing short of a genius with the ball at his feet. With his flicks, tricks, power and venomous shots, he is certain to be one of the players to light up Euro 2008 this year.

Cesc Fabregas (Spain) - The Arsenal playmaker is now regarded as one of the best players in the world and has been put in amongst the band of players with a world-class tag on their heads despite being only 21 years old. He is now so in demand and so high profile that he has even been given his own television show! There is one stage however where Fabregas hasn’t proved himself yet and that is at a major International Tournament. This summers tournament could be where Cesc Fabregas puts the remaining critics to rest so watch out for the Arsenal starlet as he will be determined to prove just how good he really is.

Pavel Pogrebnyak (Russia) - Pavel Pogrebnyak has had a fantastic season this year with his club Zenit St Petersburg and really made a name for himself in this seasons UEFA Cup competition. His 10 goals scored in the UEFA Cup this year sent his team to the final where they later went on to win and he finished as the competitions top goal scorer. He could be the man behind a surprise Russian revolution in the competition with Andrei Arshavin missing Russia’s first two matches.

Artur Boruc (Poland) - Only the host nations, Austria and Switzerland are placed lower in the Fifa World Rankings than Poland and with Germany and Croatia in their group, Poland may have to rely quite heavily on their defence and their goalkeeper to get them out of trouble. Artur Boruc has been fantastic for his club, Celtic, in recent seasons between the posts, both domestically and in the Champions League. The eccentric goalkeeper has bags of experience on the big stage and he could be the star goalkeeper at Euro 2008 this summer.
