Celtic Football Club originate in Glasgow, Scotland and currently play in the Scottish Premier League, the top league in Scottish football. The full name of the club is The Celtic Football Club but up until 1994, the club’s full name was The Celtic Football and Athletic Company Ltd.
Celtic play their home games at Parkhead (Celtic Park) but fans of the club simply refer to the ground as Paradise. The stadium has a capacity of 60,832 which makes it the largest football stadium in Scotland. Celtic’s most fierce rivals are Rangers F.C and together they make up the Old Firm which is one of the most fierce and most famous rivalries in the whole of sport. Celtic’s founding roots originate from the Irish immigrant community in Glasgow and are still linked with these roots til this day.
In 1967 Celtic became the first British team to win the European Champions Cup (now known as the Champions League), a tournament which had previously only been won by Italian, Portuguese and Spanish clubs. That year Celtic won every competition that they entered: the Scottish League, the Scottish League Cup, the Scottish Cup. the European Cup and the Glasgow Cup. Celtic are the only club ever to win the European Cup with a team made up entirely of home-grown talent, every one of the players in the winning side were Scottish and all were born within a 30 mile radius of Celtic Park. Celtic reached the European Cup final for a second time in 1970 but were beaten by Dutch side Feyenoord in extra time. It took Celtic over 30 years to reach the heights of a European final again and in 2003 Martin O’Neill led Celtic to the UEFA Cup final in Seville, Spain, where they aggonisingly lost 3-2 to F.C. Porto after extra time. Around 80,000 Celtic supporters famously travelled to Seville for the final – the largest travelling support ever to have assembled for a single game according to UEFA statistics.
The club’s traditional playing colours are green and white hooped shirts and white shorts with white socks.
