Chelsea: Their Road To The UEFA Champions League Final In Moscow

By Football Daft at 20 May, 2008, 7:38 pm

The day is finally upon us, the day of the Champions League final for the 2007/2008 season has finally arrived and it is certain to be a cracker. This years final will go down in the UEFA Champions League history books no matter how good or bad, how exciting or how drab a match it is because this is the first time in Champions League history that we will have an all English, UEFA Champions League final. Let’s have a look at how both teams managed to reach the greatest stage of all in European Club football.

Chelsea: Road To Moscow 2008

Group Stages: Chelsea started off their UEFA Champions League campaign for 2007/2008 in Group B alongside Valencia, FC Schalke and Rosenborg. Chelsea got through Group B without losing a single game, a feat which their Champions League final opponents, Manchester United, also managed to achieve. Their group record consisted of 3 wins and 3 draws, a draw against each team and a victory against each team.

Last 16: Chelsea 3 – Olympiakos 0 (agg)
In the round of the last 16, Chelsea were drawn against Greek side Olympiakos. Chelsea saw off the Greek giants with a 3-0 aggregate score. The first leg ended in a goalless 0-0 draw in Greece but Chelsea won 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in the return leg with goals from Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard and Salomon Kalou.

Quarter Finals: Chelsea 3 – Fenerbache 2 (agg)
The Quarter Final stage was a real struggle for Avram Grants team and were somewhat fortunate to scrape through against the Turkish side in the end. The Blues found it really difficult in the first leg over in Turkey and suffered a 2-1 defeat thanks to magical strike from Alex. Once again however, in the return leg at Stamford Bridge Chelsea turned it up a gear and finished the match 2-0 victors. The goals from Michael Ballack and Frank Lampard were enough to see the London club progress to the semi finals.

Semi Finals: Chelsea 4 – Liverpool 3 (agg)
Chelsea Vs Liverpool in the semi finals of the Champions League has almost become a Champions League tradition in recent years with Liverpool knocking out Chelsea twice at this stage in recent times. The Blue finally managed to get their revenge this time around though and manager Avram Grant managed to achieve in his first season what the “special one” Jose Mourinho couldn’t in 4 years at the club. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw at Anfield, it could have been all so different however of John Arne Riise hadn’t scored a 93rd minute own goal. Chelsea later went on to win the tie 4-3 on aggregate with a 3-2 win after extra time at Stamford Bridge.

The Final: Chelsea Vs Manchester United - The script has still to be written.

i love the blues and i will like to play for the blues, but it was frustrating when i saw terry miss the winning penalty after terrific Cech punch out Renaldo penalty shot. but even though i still love the blues because i know this seasons champions league is ours.
