Chelsea vs Liverpool : Preview

Amazingly this will be the 25th time that Chelsea will have played Liverpool in a mere five years. Arguably this was the fixture last season that kick started the demise of Phil Scolari at Chelsea. After their 86 match unbeaten record at home was ended by Liverpool the ex Chelsea manager lasted just another 3 months, so Ancelotti beware.

I can’t imagine anything like that happening this season however. First of all Liverpool simply aren’t as good this season, no where near it to be honest and Chelsea seem to be more organised under Ancelotti and are playing some good stuff.

Not that Liverpool aren’t capable of beating Chelsea, if this fixture has taught us anything in the past it is to expect the unexpected – and goals! But i reckon losing that unbeaten home record last season was a bit of a shock to the system so to speak for Chelsea and should they lose to Liverpool again this time around they won’t let it affect them in the same way that it did back then.

A major concern for Chelsea will be the absence of Petr Cech due to suspension after being sent off against Wigan last week. That is something Liverpool should be looking to take advantage of. Hilario or Ross Turnbull will step into goal for Chelsea, either of which Liverpool should be trying to expose and put some pressure upon.

Where it is bad news for Chelsea it is good news for Liverpool as they are expected to welcome back Javier Mascherano after his hamstring injury. He will be a massive boost for Liverpool.

If Liverpool are to win this they will have to improve on their midweek Champions League performance, a performance which Rafael Benitez described as the worst he has ever seen from his side. That being said Chelsea were hardly an inspiration themselves midweek despite a 1-0 victory, however, i don’t think either side will have problems getting motivated for this match and i expect a cracker as always.
