Everton and Arsenal are two sides who always have high expectations going into a new season but there is a lack of optimism for these two sides this year around.

Arsenal have lost two of their most high profile players during the summer in Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure while Everton have spent the summer trying to fend Man City off with their pursuit of defender Joleon Lescott.

Neither side have really been all that active in the transfer market with Arsenal only loosening the purse strings to sign centre back Thomas Vermaelen.

It is safe to say that the jury is still out on Everton and Arsenal this year but this opening game could just give us an indication of what is to come over the course of the season.
