The season hasn’t gone according to plan so far for Everton whereas their opponents Aston Villa are mixing it up near the top end of the table again. Recent form for Everton has been disappointing to say the least and it won’t get any easier for them here against Aston Villa who have been something of a bogey team for Everton in recent years.

Everton haven’t won in their last five matches and have shipped ten goals in their last three games. One thing Everton can’t afford to do against Aston Villa is give away silly goals as Villa are not an easy side to score against, recognised by them having the best defensive record in the Premier League. Should Everton go behind it would be very difficult for them to get back in the game.

To make matters worse ahead of the visit of Aston Villa there is something of an injury crisis going on at Everton with as much as ten players possibly missing out. Anichebe, Arteta, Jagielka, Neville, Vaughan and Osman are all definitely out due to injury. Other possible casualties are Bilyaletdinov, Pienaar, Saha and Yobo who will all face late fitness tests.

Despite his heroics during the week in the Villa goal Brad Guzan will step aside as his US compatriot Brad Friedel comes back into the starting the line up to make his 200th consecutive Premier League appearance. The only injury worry for Aston Villa other than long term absentees is that of Stephen Warnock who suffered a blow to his ankle but with Nicky Shorey ready to step in it shouldn’t be too much of a worry for Martin O’Neil.
