Greece Vs Spain - Match Preview

Greece are already out of Euro 2008 and are no longer defending their Euro crown so all the pressure they were under has finally lifted and hopefully they can relax, play some good football and give their fans a result to be proud of against Spain but on the other hand Spain are in scintillating form at the moment and they are more than capable of sending Greece packing without a single point to their name.

Greece striker Fanis Gekas will not feature against Spain after he broke his cheekbone playing against Russia. He will be joined on the sidelines by defenders Giourkas Seitaridis and Vassilis Torossidis while Giorgos Karagounis is doubtful in the midfield.

Spain have a few injury problems of their own. Carles Puyol is suffering with an injury to the sole of his right foot, Santi Cazorla has a swollen left foot and David Silva is suffering from a sprained ankle. All three are almost certain to be rested in an attempt to nurture them back to fitness in time for the quarter finals.

Spain have already guaranteed themselves top spot in Group D and Greece have guaranteed themselves bottom spot so it is 1st Vs Last.

On head-to-heads Spain unsurprisingly are the team who have came up trumps with 6 victories out of a possible 9 while Greece have won just once out of a possible 9. These two also met in Euro 2004, a match which ended in a 1-1 draw but their last fixture was in August 2007 which Spain won 3-2 after coming back from 2-1 down.

I never expected Greece to perform at Euro 2008 this year, so far they haven’t and i don’t expect them to start today. Spain simply have too much quality to lose this match in my opinion and i would eat my own hat if Greece win this. Their injury list doesn’t help them either and after a disappointing first two games as defending champions they will probably just want to go home at this point. My prediction = Greece 0 - Spain 3.
