Euro 2008 Group C is fast becoming the “Group Of Death” not because of it’s difficulty but because of the extensive injury list’s its teams have. Netherlands winger Arjen Robben will now miss Netherlands first Euro 2008 match against Italy today with a groin strain he picked up in training yesterday. This is bad news for Marco Van Basten as his other left winger, Ryan Babel, is also out of contention with an injury so he may have to change things around a bit when they face Italy today. Dutch striker Robin van Persie started training again with his fellow team-mates on Saturday and is eager to play against the Italians but Marco Vab Basten insists that the Arsenal man is not ready to feature in the match. Wesley Sneijder also returned to training with Van Persie on Saturday and may feature.

Italy are missing their inspirational captain, Fabio Cannavaro, who is out for the whole tournament and it looks as though they will also be missing Christian Panucci at right-back as he damaged a tendon in his knee while training last Friday.

These 2 great footballing nations have met each other 15 times, Italy have won 7 of those encounters and Netherlands just 2. The Dutch have not won any of their last 8 matches against each other. Netherlands do have an exceptional record at the European Champions however, reaching the semi final stage in 4 of the last 5 Euro tournaments. They have also played a defending World Champion on 13 previous occasions winning five times and losing just twice.

Man, this one is a tough one to call. This group is by far the most exciting group in the tournament and to be honest i really don’t fancy placing bets on any of these games, it is that tight. The Italians like to invite teams onto them, sit back, and pounce when they get the chance. Netherlands may be tailor made for them with their attacking style. On the other hand the Dutch have 2 fantastic strikers in Ruud Van Nisterlooy and Klass Jan Huntelaar who are always capable of scoring goals and with Italy missing Cannavaro and possibly Panucci they may not be quite as organised at the back. However, i am going to resist putting this one down as a draw and predict… dare i bet against the Italians?… a Netherlands win. Despite the Dutch losing a number of star players i can really see them winning this match. They have great striking options in Klass Jan Huntelaar, Ruud Van Nisterlooy and Dirk Kuyt and if Wesley Sneijder makes the match they will have plenty of delivery.
