When you are low on confidence and at the bottom of the league a visit from Manchester United isn’t ideal but that is what Portsmouth have to contend with this weekend. After a run of ten defeats from thirteen games Portsmouth fans shouldn’t be too optimistic of their chances of beating Man Utd but i guess stranger things have happened.

Blackadder would describe the season that Portsmouth have had so far as having took more twists than a twistier than twisty thing with extra twisty bits. A theory which has been backed up by the changing of yet more Portsmouth personnel ahead of the game with Man Utd with the sacking of Paul Hart and the appointment of Avram Grant.

New Portsmouth manager Avram Grant knows Manchester United all too well after his time at Chelsea began with a match against Man Utd and ended with Champions League final heartbreak also to Man Utd so there is a degree of irony that his first match in charge of Portsmouth should be against United.

Despite the fact that their club are bottom of the table Portsmouth fans may just fancy their sides chances against Man Utd this weekend (however slim those chances may be) as they have a very impressive home record against the Red Devils in the Premier League. Out of the six different occasions the clubs have faced each other at Fratton Park, Man Utd have won two while Portsmouth have won three.

Sir Alex Ferguson won’t be in the Man Utd dugout at Fratton Park as he will begin a two match touchline ban so that should also give Portsmouth a boost.

Portsmouth will be without first choice goalkeeper David James due to a calf injury so Jamie Ashdown will be between the sticks to face United. Papa Bouba Diop, Steve Finnan and John Utaka are all fighting to be declared fit in time to start but a place on the bench is more likely for Bouba Diop.

Manchester United are in a similar position to Portsmouth with Dimitar Berbatov, Johnny Evans and Fabio all facing late fitness tests while Rio Ferdinand and John O’Shea are definite absentees.
